For those who couldn’t make it, don’t worry! You can catch up on the discussion by accessing the recording online here.

Event highlights:

During our event we explored the critical need for equity, diversity, and inclusion in health leadership, emphasising their importance in driving meaningful change and fostering more effective global health systems. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Underrepresentation in leadership: Despite calls for gender parity, less than 34% of WHO’s senior leadership and governing body were women in 2022. This highlights the need for increased representation of women in top decision-making roles.

  • Global commitment and SDGs: SDG 5 on gender equality remains critical, but progress is slow. Key challenges include the underrepresentation of women in decision-making, the burden of unpaid care work and discriminatory laws that hinder women’s full participation and advancement in society.

  • Empowering women through policy and advocacy: Gender-responsible policies are needed to move beyond tokenistic representation and ensure that women are placed in decision-making positions of power. Elevating the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women into leadership in Australia ensures meaningful and lasting changes for themselves and their communities.

  • Transformative leadership: The conversation emphasised the need to shift from traditional leadership models to more inclusive and transformative approaches. There is a push to move away from a deficit model and towards a more purposeful and transformative leadership approaches that empower women across all sectors of health. Let’s focus on decision-making and the distribution of power!

Thank you once again for being part of this important conversation. Together, we can continue to drive change and empower women in global health leadership! 💪🌟
